The middle of the year. The month when summer officially begins. My birthday month and the last year in my forties…

I know it is just another year, age doesn’t really bother me that much, but the last year of my forties, just when did that happen??

When I eventually move into my fifties next year, I know it will just be another birthday, I know trumpets will not sound, but it will feel like a shift, this I know. I look in the mirror these days and I know I am looking older. I want to see the skin of my twenties, tight, plump, but alas this is no longer what looks back at me. I don’t consider myself vain, but my heart sinks just a tiny little bit.

I hate to say it, but I get tired more quickly too. I am busy, but 20 years ago I could be this busy {more actually} and it wouldn’t bother me a jot! And I know, between then and now there has been a lot, a child, illness, death and oh so many good times {laugh lines to prove that!) so how could I {we} ever look the way I {we} did?

I know this post sounds melancholy, but that isn’t my intention. I actually intend, next year {every year} to celebrate life {being alive} with all its guts and glory. It’s thrown some shit at me, but I am still here, breathing and with so very much to be grateful for.

So, as I move into the last year of my forties, I salute you, I salute myself, I salute life because I am here living it when so many aren’t.

Happy June!

here & now

Lilac trioI am saying hello after nearly a month {unplanned} away from this space. I do hope this post finds you well?

Summer has arrived, REALLY arrived, with a sleep-inducing heaviness that makes every movement a bit of an effort. The upside of this is that all the windows and doors are flung open and the outside feels more inside, which I love.

Work has been so busy and will continue to be this week, but I sense a slowing down, anxiety lifting a little, for which I am very grateful. I have felt a little fraught and frazzled these past weeks, hence the lack of time here on the blog.

It will be holiday time for us this coming Saturday with a week in the Lake District, which we cannot wait for. The view from our cottage looks amazing and we intent to do a lot of nothing…just what we need! I also hope to take lots of lovely photographs and just really soak up the tranquility and beauty of the area.

That’s all from me, for now. Whatever you are doing, or maybe not doing, this summer, I hope it brings you joy!

here & now

here and how june 6 2016The warm weather has arrived and not before time. Today has been glorious, as was yesterday, and it is set to stay until mid-week. The doors and windows are open, the garden is so green and the world seems a happier place when the sun shines.

I celebrated my birthday on Saturday eating breakfast out with my husband and son and a meal with friends at home in the evening. It was a very lovely day and I was quite spoiled with gifts, cards and general niceness.

Michelle’s lovely offering Just 5 Things began yesterday. I really wanted to join in, but knew I would be busy over the coming weeks, so decided it would be best not to this time round. She is however offering a summer version of 28 Moments which I most certainly intend to sign up for.

My son had his History exam today and over the coming weeks there are exams in English, Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Music. He amazes me really, how he takes everything in his stride, unlike me at that age with my nervous stomach and anxiousness. I am not saying he isn’t a little apprehensive, but he does seem pretty calm about the whole exam thing.

How’s your here and now, I would love to know?

Day two {three days, three quotes challenge}

And myriad leaves, on which the Summer wrote
Her blushing farewell, at my feet were strown.
~Albert Laighton (1829–1887), “In the Woods,” c.1859

How wonderful is this quote? The thought that Autumn leaves are Summer’s farewell…exquisite! The full poem can be found here.

Thanks again to Grace for inviting me to take part in this challenge. Today I would like to invite the lovely Marija to take part {if you have the time or inclination}.

Wishing you all a lovely week!

The soft light of late August hints at change, subtle, but enough to know that autumn will soon be here and summer will lose her grip.

The flowers are dying, yet still the bees persist and feast on the waning lavender. Plums and apples ripen, ready to be harvested, some dropped and rotting, food for passing bugs and birds. The hydrangea are slowly fading like watercolours run weak with too much water.

Some days we might be fooled, almost believing summer has just begun, but Nature has a way of whispering the contrary quietly in our ears. Even on days that are oh so warm with skies the bluest blue, just wait for the evening, when the sun drops before eight and a chill creeps in through open windows, bringing with it the faintest scent of autumn.

Sharing my words with you, writing along with the August prompts from Amanda at The Habit of Being. I used today’s prompt ‘Soft’.

Cool breezes and cotton skirts

I am enjoying these summer days. After a dark and incredibly sad start to the year, the long days are suiting me, even more so knowing I will be at home a lot more over the coming weeks and a week at the seaside to look forward to.

I am enjoying the cool breezes. The blue skies that intermittently cloud over with grey, threatening rain that never really comes…just maybe a few spots here and there.

I am enjoying feeling freer. Sandals and cool cotton skirts are my summer getup,  I love the unrestricted feel of these clothes…especially on the really warm days.

I am enjoying our garden. The unplannedness {is that a word?} of it, watching the birds enjoy it and bees too. I really treasure our outside space.

I am enjoying summer despite a deep love for spring and autumn. I guess life is too short for a favourite season and each one should really be savoured.

What are you enjoying about summer?
