Up the road

doune castle

~

I have prepared; washing, ironing, cleaning, sorting and now today I will be packing.

Tomorrow we will travel ‘up the road’ to Scotland, we three, for a week of beautiful views, good food, castles, walks in the wilds and paddling in Lochs; we may even squeeze in a visit to the coast. Seven days where nothing else matters other than spending time together (mostly gadget free).

We have many wonderful memories of Scotland already, a place we love dearly, with more to be made in the coming week.

There may not be much, if any, contact with the online world, although I will try to fit in some writing with good old pen and paper.

~

We’ll take a trip in evening light

to a place we know and love.

We’ll take off our shoes to paddle bare feet

then o’er the water of Bonnie Loch Earn

we’ll watch the sun retreat.

Two subjects I love to write about are memories and nature…they really inspire me, so every Friday I will post either a poem, prose, story or a photograph with perhaps a few words based on one of these two subjects.

An early evening walk

Early evening

sun ebbing slowly west

at the end of a too-hot day.

~

We walked

on dirt tracks flanked with hog weed

and freckled by percolated light.

Breathing deep

 as the day’s heat waned

under trees alive with birdsong.

Preserving memories with words.

Falls of Leny

Falls of Leny

In this place

With water pure

From ancient hills

Running like blood

Through veins of earth

Flowing o’er time-worn rocks;

We stood with hearts open

And let nature fill our souls.

 …

This photograph was taken 10 years ago at The Falls of Leny in Scotland. We were just doing a bit of rock hopping when a gentleman joined us with his pipes and began to play. It was a little surreal and incredibly emotional…one of my most treasured memories. When we visit the falls again next week, I will take a photo of my son now, but I won’t hold my breath for a pipe serenade this time!

Seasons loved

Spring

Spring

I watch you fall from winter’s keep

Gracious season; you’ve waited long

Returned to life from cold earth sleep

To sing your sweet and radiant song.

Autumn

Autumn

As summer bids farewell

My beloved autumn waits.

Place your golden hand in mine

Let’s travel the road to winter.

It’s been warm this past week…dead heat some days, which I do not enjoy. It makes me miss spring and autumn…the seasons I love most . I won’t complain though as there is much to love about summer; time off work (whoop!), slowing down and a holiday (double whoop!).

Letter to a lost love

letter to a lost love

I think of you sometimes, still.

I might be walking

maybe making dinner

or, when I occasionally play

The House of Love;

then, of course,

I am reminded.

It ended before it began

but I had already fallen in love.

You were beautiful and lost

and I was desperate to be found.

You weren’t unkind, but I knew.

I saw you years later,

do you remember?

I was found and wanted

and you were still lost;

you were so pleased to see me.

I wanted to hold you

to make you to feel found,

but of course I couldn’t,

that was another life.

I know I loved you

because even now, I still

hope that you are happy.

Into the wilderness

Into the wilderness

Amidst the rocks

and long, sun-faded grass

we would walk;

an adventure to be had.

~

Stopping only

when our bellys growled

then onward into the wilderness

climbing to the highest point.

~

We would survey our land

with the late summer sun

hot on our freckled cheeks

the whole world before us.

~

This is a place that

has stayed in my heart

memories planted deep

food for a youthful soul.
