This is enough

this is enough

~

Amidst daily life,

both the light

and the dark,

there is a completeness

 woven into

the ebb and flow;

an unseen thread.

The knowledge

that even under

the blackest skies

we will find light.

There is a peace;

I feel it in my core

and I know

 this is enough.

Swallows

baby swallow

swallow 1

Nature, big or small, is always an adventure.

Swallow chicks waiting on a fence to be fed. They were so undaunted by our presence, but I guess the promise of a tasty worm or insect does that to you.

An utter joy to see them so close-up.

The Swallow

by Thomas Aird

The swallow, bonny birdie, comes sharp twittering o’er the sea,
And gladly is her carol heard for the sunny days to be;
She shares not with us wintry glooms, but yet, no faithless thing,
She hunts the summer o’er the earth with wearied little wing.

The lambs like snow all nibbling go upon the ferny hills;
Light winds are in the leafy woods, and birds, and bubbling rills;
Then welcome, little swallow, by our morning lattice heard,
Because thou com’st when Nature bids bright days be thy reward!

Thine be sweet mornings with the bee that’s out for honey-dew;
And glowing be the noontide for the grass-hopper and you;
And mellow shine, o’er day’s decline, the sun to light thee home:
What can molest thy airy nest? sleep till the day-spring come!

The river blue that rushes through the valley hears thee sing,
And murmurs much beneath the touch of thy light-dipping wing.
The thunder-cloud, over us bowed, in deeper gloom is seen,
When quick reliev’d it glances to thy bosom’s silvery sheen.

The silent Power, that brought thee back with leading-strings of love
To haunts where first the summer sun fell on thee from above,
Shall bind thee more to come aye to the music of our leaves,
For here thy young, where thou hast sprung, shall glad thee in our eaves.

Writing memories & nature

eggs

Two things I love to write about are memories and nature…they are subjects that really inspire me, so every Friday I will post either a poem, prose or story based on one of these two subjects. Today’s is a memory poem and I hope you enjoy it.

Staying with Nan

~

The swoosh of nighttime traffic

transient, intermittent;

soothing.

Headlights trace the wall

briefly illuminating the room.

The frill on the pillowcase

between my fingers

and the smell of her perfume;

comforting.

A soft bed

where sleep is easily found.

Then, a kiss on the brow,

‘Time for sleep now,

we have eggs to buy tomorrow

and a cake to bake.’

If  you would like to join in every Friday it would be lovely to have some company!

I’ll put the kettle on.

Coming together

coming together

These days writing is definitely becoming something ‘I do’. It is a habit, not quite like brushing my teeth, but a more-often-than-not daily thing. I do lapse into days where the words feel slightly constipated, but even if I write two crappy lines, it’s better than nothing.

I have read back over my writing and well (coughs loudly) some of it is a little, errr, well you know. Some poems and pieces I have written I am actually quite proud of…but good or bad, it continues to be an enriching experience and a source of great joy, and that has to be a good thing, right?

I love it here, I love the people I have met through writing on this blog, people, who like me, just simply love to write. Slowly, slowly, it is coming together and I like how it makes me feel.

I know joy

honeydew melon 1

In the smile of my child, I know joy;

like a warm blanket around my heart.

In the love I receive, I know joy;

like strong arms holding me, should I fall.

In all that nature gives, I know joy;

like a breath of fresh air through my soul.

In friendship, I know joy;

like a guiding star in the night sky.

Yes, I know joy and she knows me,

we two are well acquainted, you see.

Essence of summer – a reflection

summer

When I first read yesterday’s prompt ‘essence of summer’ my instinct was to  make a list of things I love about summer (open windows, days out, flowers, cloudless skies…you get the picture) but I didn’t have time to finish the post and it never got published. So, today I reflected on the list, and while everything on it still stands, there is only really one thing that describes the essence of summer for me and that is time with my family.

From mid-July there is no school for 6 weeks and my husband and I have as much time off work as possible. We have a holiday planned, a week in Scotland, and the rest of the time will be filled with lazy days (oh, the joy of not having to get up for anything), trips to the seaside and just generally spending time together. Years go by so fast, our boy will be 15 next birthday, so I am going to cling onto our time together this summer like my life depends on it and savour every single minute.

We fell in love

We fell in love

We laid there on the grass

listening to the earth

and our own heartbeats.

The trees were whispering

and so were we;

sweet nothings and sweet everythings.

We fell in love as night came;

swathed in stars

with the moon our witness.

Dappled dell

sweet memories

of childhood past.

Today I was inspirited both by writealm’s prompt ‘past/present’ and also the photo inspiration from Monday…walks in the woods are amongst my favourite childhood memories. What are your favourite memories?

There is a darkness

There is a darkness

There is a darkness

light fights to penetrate.

There is a darkness

that suffocates; thick and stifling.

There is a darkness

brutal in its desolation.

But, there is a place

the darkness cannot reach.

Take my hand; I am strong

and walk with me where the stars shine.
